There has always curiosity surrounding the mystical and the divine, with spirituality being the new ‘mantra’ in well-being; one of the most common representations that has the internet abuzz these days is the ‘Mandala’. From home decor to beach towels, these intricately patterned designs are always popping up on our Instagram feed. But ‘mandalas’ are not just some exotic trend that has become internet famous lately; these spiritual symbols have been in existence for centuries.  Though in the western countries ‘Mandala’ has become a generic term to refer to any circular ornament used in meditation as a relaxation tool, on the contrary; this symbol usually represented by intricate concentric circles has a deeper meaning. They are spiritual symbols that are considered to be a visual representation of the cosmos.

Mandala is a Sanskrit word which means ‘circle’. So usually a mandala is series of intricate concentric circles with other patterns within it. This spiritual symbol is commonly found in Hinduism, Buddhism and some aspects of Jainism. Just how there is no endpoint in a circle, the circular design of the mandala is symbolic that life is never-ending and everything is connected. Within the circular patterns you will find symbols that are common in most mandalas. The centre of the mandala is a dot which is a symbol that is considered to be free of dimensions, the dot is surrounded by lines and geometrical patterns that symbolize the universe and this is encompassed by an outer circle which represents the cyclical nature of life. As per Buddhism they represent the presence of Buddha’s mind in an abstract form which is usually represented as a wheel, tree, flower or jewel.

Gehna’s delicate Mandala collection is a representation of the cosmos and our relationship with the mystical infinite. It is inspired by the geometric figures symbolizing wholeness. Wearing these delicate hand-crafted, gold pieces every day is a perfect way to reconnect with your spiritual core and let the universal energy resonate from within you. Gehna’s exquisite mandala pendants, gold earrings and bracelets are handcrafted in 18k Gold and are studded with brilliant gemstones.

The versatility of the Mandala collection is that it can be worn with any outfit and on any occasion. Take the Latticed Diamond and 18k Gold pendant or the Axial Gold and Rosecut Diamond pendants, these delicate circular patterned pendants can be worn as everyday jewellery or occasionally. It can be paired with a simple linen maxi dress, kurta, or a pastel block printed, cotton sari. Since mandalas have been known to relax the mind and body by helping cultivate the feeling of inner peace and happiness, wearing a piece of jewellery that is representative of this spiritual symbol will help you draw on this positive energy.

Another piece of everyday jewellery that you can pair with your jeans and a cute off-shoulder top is the Spoked 18k Gold bracelet. This is a delicate gold bracelet with a mandala charm which helps with general well-being is dainty and mystical.

The bedazzling Mandala flower, multi-Sapphire pendant with an inner floral design and ‘chakra’ like outer design on the other hand is a more dressy piece of jewellery. The Mandala flower jewellery is perfect for those occasions like evening functions or ‘poojas’ which require you to dress up in your resplendent silk saris or brilliant jewel-toned kurtas.

We love the intricacy of the filigree danglers that can elevate any outfit, be it a breezy summery dress or a maxi skirt paired with a cami top.

Mandalas ease stress, anxiety, fear and depression and have the power to activate creativity and improve focus.

Gehna’s Mandala art jewellery incorporates the spirituality behind the sacred symbol which is a representation of the individual’s spiritual journey. These journeys are usually in levels, the first level is usually about understanding the unity in the cosmos and then it is about the individual finding their own place within this cosmos. In Hinduism, the mandala is sometimes drawn as a circle enclosing a square with a deity on either side; this is used to help with yoga and meditation.

Mandalas have many benefits from improving sleep to enhancing self-esteem. It is known to foster a sense of connectedness with one’s self and others and bring about self-acceptance. So bring home a piece of Gehna’s magnificent mandala collection and stay connected to your spiritual self.

Good things come in small packages, and the latest jewellery trends come in stacks. Bracelet stack sets and ring stacks are one of the top jewellery trends of 2018 and what’s not to love about it? Stacking your jewellery essentially means layering two or more pieces of jewellery to create a new look. Stacking is a great way for your creativity to shine, to flaunt your style and personality. Not to mention, the possibilities are endless.

Assembling a stylish stack of jewellery isn’t a difficult task. You can master the art with a few basic guidelines. Whether you’re edgy, a minimalist, a free-spirited bohemian or a vintage lover, all you need to remember is to mix various textures, shapes, colours and finishes. But that doesn’t mean you wear every single bracelet in your jewellery box. Stacking jewellery is more about which pieces you wear, rather than how many. Here are a few tips that will help you ace this trend.

Pick a Focal Point

When you’re talking about a bracelet stack, try to pick a focal point. Then the rest of your bracelets would act as accents around it to create a textured and varied look. So to choose your focal point, it comes down to what you want to emphasise. This could be your favourite bracelet, a piece that matches your outfit or even a watch. Once you identify your focal point, it becomes easier to pick accent pieces that will highlight rather than overwhelm it. Bracelet stacks with a watch work exceptionally well. The bracelets can dress up and compliment your watch giving it a more elaborate look. Depending on your watch’s band, you can play around with different textures and overall looks.

Mix Materials

Forget the rules about pairing like materials. Think out of the box and pair different textures, materials and colours. With stacking bracelets and rings, anything goes. Mixing textures and materials can make your stacking combination look more visually appealing. Experiment with two or three different metals, combine beads with metals, gemstones with leather bands and so on. To create a casual look with your bracelet stack, pair some colourful pieces with leather bracelets. Dress up your outfit by pairing gemstone bracelets with sleek metal pieces.

When it comes to stacking rings, there are no hard and fast rules. Stack multiple rings on one finger and keep the rest of your fingers bare. Experiment with shapes and lines. Try a combination of vertical, horizontal and criss-cross rings. This will create the illusion of negative space and will also give the impression that you aren’t wearing too many rings at once.

Incorporate Various Sizes

Size is a great way to add variety to your bracelet and ring stacks. Stick to one or two cuffs for your bracelet stack and a statement ring for your ring stack. This way, you can avoid your forearm and fingers looking chunky and heavy. Use few broad bands or several thin bands to create different looks and feels.

Play with Colour

The easiest way to do this is by using bracelets and rings in different tints and stones. Make a statement and personalise your look with the gemstone of your birth month. You could use gemstones or metals of other colours as accents. Stagger rings with stones, so they don’t line up vertically. Not only will this be comfortable for you, but it will also look more appealing.

Look for Inspiration

The colour and shape of your bracelets and rings should be inspiration enough. But if you need fresh ideas, take a look at your clothes and try to match your stacks to them. Nature is always a great inspiration. Look for bracelets that reflect animal and floral motifs, like our Tessera Collection.

Comfort matters

If your job involves typing a lot, then wearing a sack of chunky bracelets will hold back on your productivity. Try wearing delicate bracelets and rings, so you get maximum comfort without compromising on style. Similarly, use your rings and bracelets on your non-dominant arm to avoid any discomfort. You can also check out our blog on jewellery styles that work for the office.

The secret to the perfect stack of bracelets and rings is confidence. As long as you love the combination you’ve created, that’s what matters. You can be classical or trendy, vintage or bohemian. Stacking bracelets and rings have no rules.

If you’re feeling inspired to try some ring bracelet stack sets of your own, then head over to Gehna for a wide range of stacking ring and bracelets.

People the world over know just how beautiful handcrafted jewelry can be. They come in assorted colors, sizes and designs, and some would even say the range exceeds that of other types of jewelry. Professional handcrafting is an art form that goes back many decades to India’s rich royal heritage. Bringing style, elegance and sheer magnificence to jewelry are professional handcrafted pieces.

Professional Handcrafted Jewelry – The process

Customization is what such jewelry like this is all about. After all, not everyone knows exactly what they’re looking for in a jewelry piece of this elevated beauty. Making handmade jewelry based on your personal preferences with of course the usual traditional touches going everywhere else, results in a piece that’s amazing indeed.

Personal attention is given to each piece. This means you and your specific customer details are taken into consideration on a deep level. You can distinctly feel the perfect balance and fluid drape of the necklace over the nape of your neck and shoulders. This is something Gehna is an expert at providing.

Your customized jewelry design journey involves a sit-down with a designer and a gemologist and figuring out what you want based on style, materials, budget, and so on. The designer then gives you an estimate of the overall piece. Once you’ve put down an advance of about 50% of this estimate, the overall piece and work begins in earnest.

The kind of labor involved is a simple staff of skilled artisans who bring their talents to bear on the project at hand. They work as a team to make these marvels. You might have heard of ‘labor love’, meaning the amount of concern, passion and work the artisans put into their creations. Not only do they take pride in what they do, their attention to detail imparts a human touch, which is something you won’t find going into machine made jewelry. It is quite outstanding to see the jewel shown to you in the ‘ghaat’ stage (this is without the gemstones added).

Gehna Workshop (1)

The artisans use draw plates to pull out gold wires or gold sheets, as the piece calls for, and form the required thickness during this time. They make good use of fine tools to cut and saw these metal sheets into the desired shape. This is the flexibility you are looking for and it’s possible in professional handcrafted jewelry.

Once the metal sheets are given form, the gold elements are next on the table. Placing them on wax, the artisans get to work shaping and designing. They also solder any metal involved to best effect.

After you’ve approved the ‘ghaat’ look of your jewelry piece and checked for size and fit, it’s back to the workshop where it’s inserted in a lac/wax setting and the gemstones are taken out for setting. Ultrasound is used to clean the dirt and other fine debris from the end product and that’s it.

As simple as it may sound, it’s actually quite tricky and requires immense amounts of hard work to produce a handcrafted piece of jewelry based on custom design.

Handcrafted Jewellery vs Machine Made Jewellery

Machine made or ‘cast’ jewelry is very high end and as such makes it possible to remove air bubbles (porosity), enhance color and use alloys to reduce melting point and so on. Certainly there is a differences between handcrafted and machine made jewelry.

As hinted in the earlier section, personal attention is something that can’t be gotten through machine made jewelry. You can’t really expect the exact customized design in machine made pieces, because cast jewelry requires the use of specific molds and particular machine settings. These don’t really permit freedom with creating designer patterns and shapes. To put it simply, machine made jewellery cannot be customised to the same perfection professional handcrafted jewelry can.

Another reason why handcrafted jewelry is more flexible is that it gets you to be part of the process. You can’t really go into the manufacturing plant itself to see how machine made jewelry is coming about. This brings us to the next question…

Handcrafted Jewellery – The preferred option

Aside from the immense popularity it’s enjoying, handcrafted jewelry allows you the chance to play with your imagination, choose varied designs and do so in a short period of time. You are involved in the process and the value you pay for these pieces is justified.

Handcrafted jewelry making is much more environment friendly. It doesn’t rely on unnecessary fuel and such like in the creation stage and makes it easier to recycle scraps and work with all the material available on the table instead of throwing a bunch into a machine and letting it take care of the rest.

At Gehna, for instance, you’ll find each jewelry piece they work with is one of a kind. Unlike general jewellery stores where multiple pieces of the same design are available, Gehna does not replicate any of its designs. You can therefore expect that singular unique touch with professional handcrafted jewelry. Yours will be the only piece of that design in the whole world.

Filigree 18K Gold Jhumki

Yes, handmade jewelry often takes a long time from phase one of the creation process to the finish line. Once you see the end result, though, you’ll agree the wait was well worth it. You certainly understand that there are immense amounts of effort and sheer craftsmanship and quality going into your one of a kind jewelry piece. Compared to this fact, the waiting period becomes quite brief.

By buying professional handmade jewellery, you support the valuable craft and tradition behind this artform that often traces its roots back centuries. The present-day process of handcrafted jewelry helps preserve these traditions and the cultures they come from.

Whatever the reason you choose handcrafted jewelry, it’s fast becoming the next big trend in the world of beauty and fashion; your investment will be worth it.The true value of handcrafted jewelry rests in the simple beauty and ultimate perfection that goes behind its design.

If you’ve found yourself lost for words when it came to describing styles in fashion, specifically in jewellery, here’s where you could get acquainted with style terminology and what they really mean…All it takes is a few key observations!

‘Classic’…

Would transcend generations
Does not have distinct motifs
Highlights the material, not the subject/motif

‘Period’…

Is from a certain period in the art history, viz, Nouveau, Edwardian, Victorian, Byzantine, Baroque, and Rococo.
Have distinct elements with reference to materials used, gemstone setting styles, motifs and treatments for each period.

‘Contemporary’…

Reflects new interpretations of old ideas
Is off-beat
Breaks conventional norms

‘Artistic’…

That glorifies freedom of expression
May not necessarily incorporate precious materials
Is not replicated very easily

‘Mongrel’…

That does not have an distinctive identity / design philosophy

Now, the fun part is where we actually do a bit of this and a bit of that, and come up with styles that are fresh and suit your personality, since nobody wants what has already been done. So, we could have a contemporary-classic, or a period-inspired contemporary piece of work!

At Gehna we love creating new designs with gold, silver, diamond, ruby, emerald etc that suit your taste & style. So hope you enjoyed this tidbit of information 🙂

Happy styling!!!
