Gem Gossip – Peridot

The remarkable Peridot stone is a lime green gemstone and is one of only a few gemstones that exist in a single colour. Olivine, of which peridot is a type, is a common mineral in magnesium and iron rich (mafic) rocks and ultramafic rocks. It is often found in lavas and in peridotite inclusions in igneous rocks of the mantle that lavas carry to the surface. Peridot can be also found in meteorites. Olivine, in general, is a very abundant mineral, but gem quality peridot is rather rare. This is due to the mineral’s chemical instability on the Earth’s surface. Olivine is usually found as small grains, and tends to exist in a heavily weathered state, unsuitable for decorative use. Large crystals of forsterite, the variety most often used to cut peridot gems is rare. As a result olivine is considered precious. Peridot gemstones smaller than three carats are very common, but gemstones over five carats are rare and therefore have a higher value. Peridot in the 10 to 15-carat size range are rarer still, but provide a big and bold look at an affordable price.

            Peridot

Peridot olivine is mined in Arkansas, Arizona on the San Carlos Reservation, Hawaii, Nevada, and New Mexico at Kilbourne Hole, in the US, and in Australia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Kenya, Mexico, Myanmar (Burma), Norway, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. Today, most Peridot comes from Arizona but it is also found in China, Myanmar, and Pakistan. Peridot is available in several colours ranging from yellowish green to brown, but the bright lime greens and olive greens are the most desired.

Leo is a very dynamic sun sign. The characteristics of Leos are very clearly pronounced as the sign is ruled by the sun. The birthstone of Leo is Peridot and the principle element is fire. The warm-hearted Leos have a royal air about them. They are eager to help and have an honest approach to life. Leo always symbolizes activity inspired by wisdom. The heart in the human body is ruled by Leo which is also the sun center for an ideal illuminated life. The golden green soft glow of Peridot acts as a light of wisdom for the Leo. It can potentially have a huge influence in the wearer’s character. As it renders an impact on the individual, it also helps him or her play a vital role in shaping society at large. Leos are considered to be the torch bearers, those who initiate action and thus are capable of bringing about a change.

Along with being the birthstone of August, peridot is considered auspicious for couples celebrating their 16th anniversary. Peridot is believed to instill power and influence as well as bring the wearer magical powers and properties that protect against nightmares. In ancient times it was believed that Peridot was a gift of Mother Nature to celebrate the annual creation of a new world. It has a calming effect on the wearer and is said to bring happiness and warmth in the lives of people. Peridot is also said to help people understand relationships and their values. Since this stone is related to happiness, love, and truth, it instills a sense of truthfulness in people and makes them think rationally.

Peridot also symbolizes money and luxury and is said to improve the quality of the wearer’s living standards. Worn as a necklace close to the skin, peridot protects against negative emotions. The gem is also believed to have healing properties, particularly with respect to the liver and gall bladder. When worn as an amulet, Peridot stones are good for asthma and sinus. Irrespective of whether you are an august Leo, the warm and unique hues of peridot are irresistible. Showcase the lime green shades in a pendant with diamonds to intensify the inimitable color, or as a magnificent ring that shines its warmth all around.
